Gretchen and Paul Coolidge welcomed their son Coolidge into the world on August 28, 1961, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father produced plastics for a living. The couple had three girls and a son, and they were of English, Scottish, German, and Irish ancestry.
Coolidge participated in orchestra summer camps as a child and played the clarinet. She also became intrigued by the dramatic arts. Before enrolling at Boston’s Emerson College, Coolidge attended the Cambridge School of Weston and Norwell High School. In the middle of the 1990s, Coolidge made her television debut in Seinfeld’s “The Masseuse” episode.
