In 1960, when Bauer was three years old, his family moved from Cuba to the United States. This was not long after the Cuban Revolution ended. They chose Miami, Florida, as their home. After moving to the United States, Bauer started going by the English version of his given name, Steven. He went to and graduated from Miami Dade High School in 1974. He then went to Miami Dade Community College and the University of Miami to study acting. He met Ray Liotta at the University of Miami. Like him, Liotta went on to become a famous actor.
Career
Bauer got his first big part in the bilingual PBS comedy show “Que Pasa, USA?” He played the son of a Cuban family who had moved to Miami. From 1977 to 1979, he was on the show. Then, in 1980, he was in the miniseries “From Here to Eternity” on TV. In some of his earlier works, he is credited as Rocky Echevarria, which is the stage name he thought about using before he went back to Steven.
Bauer played a role in the 1981 TV movie “She’s in the Army Now.” That’s where he met Melanie Griffith, who became his first wife. They moved to New York City so that they could continue acting classes and try out for more roles. Since Bauer and Liotta had been friends since their days at the University of Miami, they were able to move into his apartment. Bauer began taking acting classes with the well-known Stella Adler while he was in New York. During this time, he was in several off-Broadway shows. He also changed his name to Steve Bauer.
Bauer was cast as Manny Ribera in the remake of “Scarface” in 1983, even though he wasn’t a well-known actor at the time and the movie was pretty big. But his audition was good enough to convince the producers that he was the right person for the part, especially since he was from Cuba. People liked what he did in the movie. He was up for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes.
He was able to land more significant roles because of the movie’s notoriety. He was cast as Detective Frank Scigliano in the police comedy “Running Scared” in 1986. He portrayed an Israeli soldier in the Canadian television film “Sword of Gideon” that same year. The movie depicts the real-life events surrounding the pursuit of terrorists in the wake of the 1972 Munich massacre. The movie’s script served as the inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s “Munich,” which was greatly influenced by “Sword of Gideon.”
In the 1990 television miniseries “Drug Wars: The Camarena Story,” Bauer received a part as DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Additionally, he succeeded actor Ken Wahl in the title role of the final season of the TV series “Wiseguy.” In the 1990s, Bauer kept getting consistent jobs and concentrated his career on action and crime movies and TV shows. In addition to many others, he appeared in movies including “Primal Fear,” “The Blackout,” “The Versace Murder,” “King of Texas,” and “Doing a Hard Time.” In addition, he made guest appearances on “Law & Order,” “Cold Case,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and “V.I.P.”
In 2011, he got a recurring role as Don Eladio Vuente in the fourth season of “Breaking Bad.” He has appeared as a guest character in the third, fifth, and sixth seasons of the spin-off series “Better Call Saul,” where he returned to his role in 2017. Between 2013 and 2017, he portrayed Avi Rudin in “Ray Donovan.” In 2017, he also booked a recurring part in “Queen of the South” as El Santo.
