Jake Tapper: Early Life

Tapper was reared in Philadelphia’s Queen Village after being born in New York City. His parents are Helen Anne (née Palmatier) and Theodore S. “Ted” Tapper. His mother, a native of Canada, resigned from the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center after working as a mental nurse. [Reference required] His father, a native of Chicago, went to Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School before becoming head of South Philadelphia Pediatrics and an adjunct professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College. He also graduated from Dartmouth and Harvard Medical Schools. His mother, a Presbyterian who was reared, converted to Judaism; his parents are Jews. Tapper attended the Jewish summer camp Camp Ramah in the Poconos as a young boy.

Tapper attended the Philadelphia School, a forward-thinking, independent primary school renowned for its regular field trips to farms and other locations outside of the classroom. He created a comic strip for a nearby free weekly newspaper in the eighth grade. Later, he enrolled in the prestigious Jewish day school Akiba Hebrew Academy, which was once situated in Merion, Pennsylvania. He also attended Dartmouth College, earning a B.A. in History with a minor in Visual Studies in 1991, graduating with honors and the Phi Beta Kappa award. Tapper belonged to the Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity at Dartmouth. He did not spend much time in the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

The career of Jake Tapper

For Democratic congressional candidate Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (PA-13) in 1992, Tapper worked as a campaign press secretary before becoming her congressional press secretary. Tapper previously worked for Powell Tate, a public relations agency operated by Republicans Sheila Tate and Jody Powell in Washington, D.C. He represented the restaurant brand Hooters, which employs scantily dressed women as waitresses. In 1997, Tapper also held a position at Handgun Control, Inc., a predecessor of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Before starting his full-time journalistic career in 1998, Tapper authored many essays as a freelancer. He worked as a Senior Writer for the Washington City Paper for two years. While there, Tapper satirized Washington’s scandal-prone society in a story about going on a date with Monica Lewinsky. Tapper received recognition from the Society of Professional Journalists for his work at the Washington City Paper.

From 1999 until 2002, Tapper worked as the Washington correspondent for Salon.com. Tapper was an early skeptic of the Bush administration’s assertions that Iraq had WMDs, and his articles regarding Enron were nominated for a 2002 Columbia University School of Journalism online prize.

Tapper was recruited by ABC News in 2003. While employed there, Tapper reported on various subjects from Afghanistan, the ABC News Baghdad office, New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina’s breakdown of the levees, and other locations. This Week on ABC was hosted by Tapper from March to July 2010 until Christiane Amanpour took over as the show’s anchor.

On December 20, 2012, it was revealed that Tapper would work for CNN as the top Washington reporter and the host of a brand-new weekday show. In January 2013, he started working for CNN and began anchoring his play, The Lead with Jake Tapper.

Tapper has written for publications such as GQ, The Weekly Standard, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He was the anchor of the CNN program Take Five in 2001, when aspiring journalists and analysts addressed current events and popular culture. He presented several entertainment news specials on VH1 in 2002 and the Sundance Channel in 2003, and he did the same. In addition, Tapper has appeared as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Conan, The View, and Real Time with Bill Maher.
