What’s New with Grown Ups 3! Will Adam Sandler’s Franchise Come Back?
For Grown Ups 3, will Adam Sandler rejoin with his comic pals? It’s no secret that Adam Sandler’s comedies like The Waterboy, Anger Management, and Click have been tremendously popular yet frequently blasted by critics. Even though Sandler periodically surprises audiences and critics by venturing into more dramatic territory in Uncut Gems, it’s evident that he also enjoys getting paid to hang out with a bunch of his comedic pals. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and the Grown-Ups trilogy is an example of this.
Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider were boyhood buddies who reunited in 2010s Grown Ups and got into mischief together. Despite the negative reviews, the film was a financial success, inspiring the cast and crew to reunite for 2013’s sequel, Grown Ups 2, though Schneider opted not to return. In the tradition of most comic sequels, it received even worse reviews, yet it was nonetheless a huge hit.
Since this series has been so popular, it seems that a third installment is a foregone conclusion. So, what are the chances of a third Grown Ups film taking place?

The Story Behind the Grown Ups 3 Script That’s Taken Over Comedy Twitter
The majority of people who logged on to the internet on Monday weren’t expecting to see another Grown Ups movie on their screens. Even now, when Adam Sandler is being embraced by the media in a way he’s never been, the Grown-Ups franchise has been largely ignored. With his script for Grown Ups 3, Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show and writer/producer of comedy nerd-approved shows like What We Do in the Shadows and Nathan for You, steps in. No one, not even Sandler, ever asked him to write this piece. His passion for Adam Sandler’s Hanging Out With His Friends inspired him to write the script for the next film in the series. This is unlike any other Sandler film, but it’s also very much like them all. It’s still an Adam Sandler movie, even though the plot has two major, previously unimagined twists (spoiler alert): it’s about the production of Grown Ups 3 with the stars playing themselves, and a masked killer is murdering them one by one.
In April 2019 I wrote a script for GROWN UPS 3.
I was not asked to write it.
It is the best thing I will ever do in my life, professional or otherwise.
And here it is, my first gift to everyone in 2020.https://t.co/eRg3crXXFT

It was important to Scharpling, an unexpectedly ardent Sandler supporter, that his work remained true to the Sandman’s tone and aesthetic. Although Sandler and his friends’ public personas are mocked, the script is warm and caring. And it does work! Even though I’ve seen every Sandler film, I can already see how Scharpling’s Grown Ups 3 will fit right in, delving deeper into themes that Sandler has previously expressed interest in. Peyton Reed and Adam McKay both said they’d like to direct it, making it one of the most talked-about films of the year.
It’s been three years since Scharpling mentioned the idea to me casually, and like most people he probably told, I had no idea he’d follow through on it. I read it as soon as I saw him do so and realized right away that I needed to speak with him. Tuesday night, two days after its release and dominance of Comedy Twitter, I spoke with him. You can read the script here or at GrownUps3Script.com, and our conversation is included below.
