Many of her earliest performances were in churches, where she had a strong musical background. Goldband Records, a small Louisiana label, signed Parton when she was just 9 years old, and she appeared on The Cas Walker Show at the same time. Dolly moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school in 1964. She became a successful songwriter in a short period. Success
Dolly signed a contract with Monument Records in 1965 when she was just 19 years old. Initially, she was positioned as a sugary-sweet pop singer. It wasn’t a great start to her career as a pop singer. After a country song performed by another artist (Bill Phillips – with Dolly on harmony) climbed to number six on the country charts, Monument Records finally saw the light and gave up their pop dreams for Dolly.
“Dumb Blonde,” Dolly’s debut country single, peaked at number 24 on the country singles chart. The irony is that she did not pen this song. It’s one of only a few songs Dolly recorded during this period that she didn’t write herself. “Something Fishy,” her follow-up single, peaked at number 17.
In 1967, “Hello, I’m Dolly” was Dolly Parton’s first studio album. Several songs she had written that had been popularised by other artists were also included on the album. Billboard’s Hot Country Albums chart pegged the album at number 11.
Porter Wagoner
Dolly was invited to join Porter Wagoner’s syndicated weekly show “The Porter Wagoner Show” in the same year. Wagoner was quick to persuade RCA Victor to sign Dolly because he recognized her potential and saw her talent. Both Porter and Owe-publisher, Par’s Bill Owens’ nephew, purchased a 50 percent stake in the company. Consequently, Porter had a significant stake in the success of Dolly.
Just Because I’m a Woman” was the first single from her second studio album, released in 1968, and featured a duet with Porter.
Between 1968 and 1980, Porter and Dolly released 13 studio albums as a duo. Their albums spawned 21 country chart-toppers, including “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me,” which peaked at number one.
Dolly’s solo career struggled mightily for several years before finally taking off. With the release of “Jolene” in 1973, she became a household name. Originally released in February 1974, the song peaked at number one on the country singles chart and also did well on other countries’ charts around the world. On Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, the song was ranked 217th. According to Dolly, of all the songs she’s written, most versions of “Jolene” have been recorded by other artists.
Dolly Parton parted ways with Porter Wagoner in April 1974, but he continued to produce her songs until 1975.
I Will Always Love You
In 1973, Dolly started working on the song “I Will Always Love You.” They had been working together professionally for seven years when she wrote the song as a farewell to Porter Wagoner. He wanted to record it and Dolly considered it, but Colonel Tom Parker insisted she give up half of the song’s publishing rights. Dolly turned down the offer and began working on a solo version of the song.
The song debuted at number one on the Billboard country singles chart on March 18, 1974. For the movie “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” the song was re-recorded for the soundtrack and went to number one again in 1982.
Clive Davis, Whitney Houston’s mentor, and music producer was disappointed to see how little Whitney’s musical talents were utilized in the early version of the film “The Bodyguard” in 1991. Whitney should sing a song in the movie’s climax scene, Clive told producers, including Kevin Costner. “I Will Always Love You” was Costner’s own choice, based on the feedback he received. One of the ten best-selling singles in history, Whitney Houston’s rendition spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In terms of female artists, Whitney’s version is the most popular.
Royalties
Whitney’s version of the song earned Dolly $10 million in royalties in the early 1990s, which works out to about $20 million in today’s dollars. Afterward, she would make light of the fact that she had made “enough money to buy Graceland.” For every album sold, Dolly earns about 8 cents per radio play and about $2 per album sold as a result of her ownership of the writing and publishing rights.
Pop Stardom and Acting Career
Dolly continued to chart country hits between 1974 and 1980, with eight singles reaching the top of the charts. Between 1976 and 1977, she was the host of her variety show. Her 1977 self-produced album “New Harvest… First Gathering” was a collection of pop tunes and production. R&B classics “My Girl” and “Higher & Higher” were covered on the album.
She appeared alongside Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin in “9 to 5” in 1980. She also composed and sang the film’s theme song. Dolly received an Academy Award nomination and four Grammy nominations for the song “9 to 5.” She was awarded the Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance for her performance.
Dolly’s well-known films include “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “Rhinestone,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Joyful Noise,” all of which were released in 1982.
Personal Life
Carl Thomas Dean became Dolly’s husband in 1966. Dean is a recluse. He ran an asphalt road surface paving company in Nashville for most of his life. He rarely attends public events with his wife. Carl, according to Dolly Parton, has only ever seen one of her live performances.
Her nieces and nephews, as well as the goddaughter of Miley Cyrus, are all under the care of Parton and Dean, even though she doesn’t have any children of her own.
