On July 24, 1969, Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York City. She spent her childhood in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx. Her father, David López, was from Puerto Rico, while her mother, Guadalupe Rodrguez, was from New York.

David became a computer technician for Guardian Insurance after his time in the military. For the first ten years of Lopez’s existence, Guadalupe stayed at home to raise her family. She then went on to sell Tupperware, teach elementary school, and coach Lopez’s sports teams.  .

Lopez’s first paid gig was a five-month tour of Europe in 1989 with the musical revue Golden Musicals of Broadway. She was the only person in the chorus who did not get a solo, and she subsequently said that this experience taught her the value of having “thick skin” in the entertainment industry.

 At the age of 17, she appeared on an episode of Yo! MTV Raps dancing with MC Hammer.
