Early Life and Education
Monica Camille Lewinsky was born on July 23, 1973, in San Francisco, California, as Monica Camille Lewinsky. Daughter of Jewish parents Marcia (a novelist) and Bernard (a doctor of oncology) and older brother Michael, she was raised in a Jewish home in Los Angeles, California. Remarrying was the only option for Monica’s parents, who divorced in 1987 and both married again soon after. After graduating from the John Thomas Dye School, Beverly Hills High School, and Bel Air Prep, Monica Lewinsky attended Sinai Akiba Academy, the school of the Sinai Temple in Beverly Hills, where she was a student from 1989 to 1991.

She then attended Santa Monica College, where she worked in the Beverly Hills High School drama department, before transferring to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where she earned a psychology degree. The White House Office of Legislative Affairs hired Monica as a full-time employee in December 1995 after she had worked as an unpaid intern in Leon Panetta’s office since July 1995. She returned to school a decade later and earned a master’s degree in social psychology from the London School of Economics in 2006.
Presidential Scandal
According to Lewinsky’s account, she had nine sexual encounters with Clinton between November 1995 and March 1997, but none of those encounters included sexual intercourse. Since she spent so much time with President Clinton, Monica’s bosses decided to move her to the Pentagon in April 1996. Linda Tripp, a coworker of Lewinsky’s, began secretly recording her phone calls with the president in September 1997 after she confided in Tripp about their relationship.
Affidavits in the Paula Jones case in which Monica denied having a relationship with Clinton were submitted in December 1997. However, Tripp gave her tapes to Kenneth Starr, an independent counsel during Clinton’s presidency who was investigating the Clinton family’s Whitewater real estate investments, and she tried to persuade Linda to lie under oath.
He persuaded Lewinsky to keep any gifts Clinton had given her, including the blue dress that contained evidence of a sexual encounter. While Clinton initially denied having sex with Monica Lewinsky both under oath and in a press conference in January 1998, Clinton was forced to admit that he had “a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate” after Starr obtained the blue dress. Monica Lewinsky was granted transactional immunity by the Office of the Independent Counsel while testifying before a grand jury.
Career
As of this writing, Monica’s interview with Barbara Walters on “20/20” is still the second most-watched interview in television history (behind Oprah Winfrey’s 1993 interview with Michael Jackson), drawing an audience of 70 million viewers; as of this writing, the international rights earned Lewinsky $1 million. On May 8, 1999, Monica appeared on “Saturday Night Live” in two sketches.
After signing a $1 million endorsement deal with Jenny Craig, Inc. in January of 2000, Monica began appearing in commercials for the diet company. As part of the deal, she agreed to lose 40 pounds in six months. Because of the backlash, the company decided to terminate her campaign in April of that year after promising her $1 million but ultimately settling for less than half that amount. In the year 2000, Monica appeared on “The Tom Green Show” and hosted her show, “Monica’s Postcards,” on the British television network Channel 5.
On HBO’s “Monica in Black and White” in 2002, Lewinsky had the opportunity to tell her side of the story and answer audience questions. “Mr. Personality,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The View,” and “V Graham Norton” were just some of the television appearances she made in 2003. It wasn’t until 2014 that Monica started writing for “Vanity Fair” and appeared in the National Geographic Channel special “The 90s: The Last Great Decade,” as well as speaking out against cyberbullying at the Forbes “30 Under 30” event, that she came back into the public eye.
When Lewinsky was invited to speak at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity about bullying three months later, she joined the anti-bullying organization Bystander Revolution as a strategic advisor and ambassador. A book by Sue Scheff and Melissa Schorr, “Shame Nation: The Global Epidemic of Online Hate,” and a segment on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” about public shaming were both written by Monica in 2017.
Concerning “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” Monica worked with Ryan Murphy to produce the third season, which focused on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. The fall of 2020 will see the start of filming, with the show’s premiere set for the fall of 2021.
Personal Life
In an interview following the scandal, Monica revealed that she was suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder and that knitting helped her cope. In 1999, she founded The Real Monica, Inc. and began designing handbags for retailers such as Fred Segal and Henri Bendel. From 2005 to 2014, Lewinsky remained largely out of the public eye by living in New York City, London, Portland, and Los Angeles, where she wrote an essay for “Vanity Fair” entitled “Shame and Survival” and became a regular contributor to the magazine’s website.
