Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born on January 10, 1953, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City. She is a native of New York City. Both of her parents worked in the beauty industry; her mother Mildred was a cosmetologist, and her father Andrew was a sheet metal worker.
The family made the relocation to Lindenhurst, New York, which is a village located inside the town of Babylon on Long Island. Years later, when she was a student at Lindenhurst Senior High, she showed off the range of her 4.5-octave vocal in the musical theatre section of the school, where she performed in school musicals. Her original intention was to attend Julliard, but she ultimately chose to pursue a degree in health education at Stony Brook University.
However, after only one year at Stony Brook, Pat surprised everyone by marrying her high school boyfriend, a soldier named Dennis T. Benatar. She then went to Virginia with him, which is where he had been stationed at the time of their marriage. After that, she got a job as a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia, in 1973 and began her career there.

After a short period of time, Pat grew weary of the monotonous lifestyle of a housewife and bank clerk. As a result, she resigned from her position at the bank in exchange for a singing engagement at a Holiday Inn and a position as a singing waitress at a nightclub named The Roaring Twenties.
It was there that she made her first acquaintance with pianist Phil Coxon, with whom she went on to establish a duo that quickly grew into the ten-member lounge band known as Coxon’s Army. As the band gained more notoriety, Benatar and her husband Dennis relocated to New York City in May 1975 so that she could pursue a career as a solo singer.
Dennis had just been honorably discharged from the army. Her performance in Judy Garland’s “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody” was what brought her to the attention of Rick Newman, who eventually became her manager.
She became a regular performer at the Catch a Rising Star club throughout the course of the subsequent three years. In the breaks between her performances onstage, she recorded jingles for commercials to be used by Pepsi-Cola as well as a number of regional businesses. Pat was given a recording contract by Chrysalis Records in the year 1978. Pat and Dennis got a divorce not long after that, but she decided to keep Dennis’s last name.
Benatar released her fifth studio album, titled “Tropico,” in August of 1984. The album did not chart as well as her previous efforts. On the other hand, the single “We Belong” became yet another top 10 smash in the United States as well as internationally. Benatar continued her career by releasing a total of six more studio albums. Benatar has only released one album of new material since 1997’s “Innamorata,” and that album was 2003’s “Go,” which reached a peak position of No. 187 in the United States. In November 2015, she published a holiday song under the title “One December Night,” which she had previously recorded.
Benatar recorded the song “Shine” in January 2017 in order to lend her support to the Women’s March that took place on January 21, 2017. After more than ten years, she has finally released an original recording that is not related to any holiday.
In the latter part of the same year, Benatar collaborated with the producer Linda Perry to write the song “Dancing Through the Wreckage,” which was used as the score for the documentary titled “Served Like a Girl.” The song debuted on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart in October 2017, and it finally reached its highest position of number 22 in November.
