The Big Leap is an American musical comedy-drama television show created by Liz Heldens and based on the British reality television show Big Ballet, which debuted on Fox in the television season 2021–22. The show was discontinued in March 2022 after one season. On January 28, 2020, Fox gave the project a pilot order, the first for the network’s 2020–21 television season, with Fox Studio and 20th Television as co-production partners. The pilot was written by Liz Heldens.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show was pushed back to the 2021–22 television season, with Fox accepting the show on April 28, 2021. The pilot’s director and executive producer are Jason Winer, while the showrunner is Jason Heldens. On May 17, 2021, the series was planned to premiere as a current season entry during the 2021–22 television season during Fox’s Upfront presentation.
The series started on Fox on September 20, 2021, and ran through December 6, 2021. In Canada, CTV2 broadcasts the series. The series debuted as an original show on Disney+ via the digital hub Star in select territories. In Latin America, the sitcom launched as a Star+ original.

About The Big Leap
Big Ballet is a documentary series produced by Rare Day for Channel 4 and shown in the United Kingdom. For the first time, the three-episode series was broadcast on February 6, 2014. It followed Wayne Sleep and Monica Loughman, a prima ballerina, as they worked with a group of amateur dancers to realize their dream of presenting Swan Lake.
The dancers were all significantly larger than the standard in classical ballet and were described as “fat” or “real women” in the program; yet, the thinner dancers would not be categorized as “plus-size” in most circumstances.
Guests on the show were Matthew Bourne, Derek Deane, Patricia Doyle, David Plumpton, Tamara Rojo, David Nixon, and the English National Ballet. The majority of the film was shot at the Northern Ballet, with the final performance at St George’s Hall in Bradford in front of 1,500 people. The advertising drew a total of 500 responses.
The Big Leap Season 2 Story
The Big Ballet dancers have only five weeks to create their 25-minute version of Swan Lake. This isn’t a full-fledged ballet company, though. Classes in the evenings and on weekends must be organized around work and family obligations. The strain grows as the physicality of the job ahead and the enormity of what they’ve taken on begin to take their toll on the dancers. Monica and Wayne are also under duress; in addition to getting the dancers ballet-ready, they must also put on a Swan Lake performance that will impress the critics.
The set, costumes, and music all have to be spectacular. Wayne and Monica have cast all of the roles and have taught the dancers fundamental ballet basics. The dancers are exhausted after months of training, physical setbacks, and fear with less than five weeks till they perform they’re supersize Swan Lake in front of a 1500-person audience, including all the great and good of the ballet establishment.
