Early life
Perry was born Emmitt Perry, Jr., on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He did not graduate high school but received a GED. After suffering abuse at the hands of various family members throughout his earlier years, Tyler began writing as a way to help heal his mental wounds. During his early 20s, an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, which emphasized the good and therapeutic influence writing can have on a person, prompted him to seek a career in the industry.
Writing proved to be a beneficial getaway for Perry. He went on to compose himself a series of letters that later became the jumping-off point for the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed. This, as well as his other stage shows, swiftly garnered a huge following across Atlanta and beyond, peaking at more than 35,000 audience members every week.
Before filming a single Hollywood movie, Perry reportedly sold more than $100 million worth of tickets to his plays, as well as $30 million worth of related videos and products.
Film Success
Jumping off his home-grown success, Perry approached production studio Lionsgate with a pitch. Perry would put up half the money for an upcoming project that would need a $5.5 million budget. Lionsgate made up the other half and took a minor fee for marketing and a 12 percent fee for distribution. They would split the proceeds after those costs 50-50. Their debut movie under this arrangement was 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The picture grossed $50.6 million domestically and later generated an additional $150 million from TV syndication and home video sales. As part of his Lionsgate arrangement, Perry owns the content and keeps half the proceeds.

Perry’s directorial debut occurred in 2006 with his second picture, Madea’s Family Reunion, which opened at number one at the box office with $30.3 million. The picture ultimately grossed $65 million. (And he has directed each of the succeeding Madea flicks.)
Tyler created 14 “Madea” movies. Those flicks grossed almost USD 700 million at the movie office. Each picture cost less than $10 million to make. Since Perry writes, directs, and produces all of his movies nearly totally independently, he can take home the lion’s share of each of his film’s profits. A lion’s portion of around $300 million.
Perry’s films are primarily oriented toward an African American audience and they often incorporate subtle nods to Christianity.

TBS enticed Perry and Payne away from CW by providing him a $200 million production guarantee and a 90-episode commitment. Oh, and Tyler would own the show. Tyler famously only spent $60 million on production expenditures. He retained the remaining $140 million for himself.

Tyler Perry: How To Be Successful
In 2012 Tyler posted a video to YouTube in which he answered the question he is asked most frequently: “How did you make it?!” Here is his reply:
“There is only one response to that… Truth be told, it was nothing but the grace of God. Nothing except the grace of God. You can plant seeds all day long. You can go about giving your business card out to folks. You can go about knocking on doors and auditioning. You can do all of that every day of your life and nothing occurs. When a seed is put in the ground, all you can do is water it. You cannot control the sunshine. You cannot control the weather and you cannot control if the locusts arrive and try to destroy it. All you can do is place your seed in the earth, water it, and trust. That is what allowed me to be in this position right now. I would not cease believing. My seed was successfully sown by me.
I put in a lot of effort. My only thought was to stage a play… My only thought at the time. One play at a time was all I had in mind. And I was confident that everything else would fall into place if I could only get that to work. There are so many people out there that are going in so many different directions. This is what they plan to do this week.
That’s what they plan to do next week. After that, they’ll be working in the real estate industry for the next week. They plan to launch a salon the following week. There are a lot of people like this, and I attempt to get them to focus on one item at a time. Aim for a single goal… Focus on a single thing. Make it a top priority and persist with it…” T. Perry, Jr.
