What Caused John Denver Divorce?

After only a short time together as a couple, John Denver and Annie Martell tied the knot in the middle of the 1960s when they were both in their early 20s. Annie freely stated that they did not actually know each other despite their proximity. During this time, John was an active member of the Mitchell trio and traveled extensively with them.

After they got married, they struggled financially for a while, which made their relationship more difficult to manage. John stated in his autobiography as well as on the CDs that he prepared to accompany the book that he had been unfaithful to Annie and that this behavior had worsened as he became famous. The CDs were made to complement the book. He didn’t spend much time in Colorado, which is where they had a home, and over the 1970s, the couple split up multiple times, which is one of the things that inspired “Annie’s Song.”

The early 1980s saw the beginning of Annie and John’s divorce. John first met Cassandra Delaney in 1986. At the time, she was well known for her role in the 1986 film Fair Game, in which she starred in a variety of revealing outfits. The age difference between them was twenty years.

After only having known each other for a few days at the time, John admitted in his memoirs that he was warned about Cassie by her boyfriend, whom she said farewell to at the airport before flying to Aspen with John. According to John, there were whispers circulating that Cassandra had been disloyal to him when they were courting him.
