Early Life

Mariah Carey was born on March 27th, 1970, in Huntington, New York, to a musical family. Her ancestry is a mix of Afro-Venezuelan and Irish as well as African American. When he moved to New York, her father’s father changed his last name from Nunez to “Carey.”. As a child, her mother was an operatic soprano and voice teacher. When Mariah was three, her parents divorced.

Mariah began composing poetry and early songs at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, while she was a student. In 1987, she earned her high school diploma. Mariah became friends with Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies at Harborfields, where she began writing whole songs with lyrics and melody with the help of these two. After graduation, Mariah, Gavin, and Ben continued to work together to make a full-length demo while living in New York City.

Pop vocalist Brenda K. Starr was ultimately given a copy of the demo. When Brenda took Mariah to several industry galas, she kept the demo rolling by handing out flyers. The demo cassette was given to Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records, at one of these galas. On the drive home, he listened to the cassette in the car. He was confident Mariah Carey would be a star after hearing the first two songs.

Even though it took Tommy two weeks to locate Mariah, he immediately signed her to a record deal and formed a team to plan her commercial launch. Tommy saw Mariah as Columbia’s response to Arista’s Whitney Houston.

Success

On June 12th, 1990, Mariah Carey released her self-titled debut album. According to reports, Columbia spent $1 million on marketing the album. In the US alone, the album went 9X platinum and sold more than 15 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. She won a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the album, which peaked at number one on the Billboard charts.

However, it was Mariah’s third studio album, 1993’s “Music Box,” that catapulted her to new heights of fame and fortune. Astonishingly, Music Box sold 28 million sales worldwide after spending 128 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s one of the best-selling albums in history.

Her success did not fade away quickly. “Merry Christmas,” her follow-up album, sold more than 15 million copies around the world. Since then, she has sold over 20 million copies of her three subsequent albums.

“All I Want for Christmas” Royalties

Probably the most prominent song on Mariah’s Christmas album is “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide and is still going strong. As a result, it has become a seasonal favorite on music streaming platforms like Spotify and Pandora. Mariah and producer Walter Afanasieff make an estimated $600,000 a year from the song, which was supposedly written in 15 minutes. To date, gross royalties from the song have exceeded $60 million.

Virgin Contract

Mariah signed a record-breaking $100 million, five-album deal with Virgin Music in April 2001 after leaving Columbia Records. After factoring in inflation, that comes out to $150 million. When this deal was struck, it was the most lucrative in the history of the music industry.

On August 18, 2001, Mariah’s first album with Virgin, “Glitter,” was released. When the album was released, it was used as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, which was based on a fictionalized Mariah Carey character. On September 21, 2001 – 10 days after the 9/11 terrorist events – both the album and picture were blasted by critics and audiences. The film has been widely regarded as one of the greatest box office failures of all time.

Mariah had to be hospitalized for fatigue even before the film’s premiere. Physical and emotional breakdowns are said to have taken place.

3 million copies of the album were sold throughout time. Any other artist would have been proud of that accomplishment. Unfortunately, the newly signed $100 million pact between Mariah and Virgin was a failure.

To get rid of Mariah as quickly as possible, Virgin paid her $28 million to terminate the contract early. Mariah was paid a total of roughly $50 million to make one album for Virgin, which she did.

Return to Success

Mariah got a $24 million, five-album deal with Island Records after being dropped by Virgin. Her Island albums did okay, with her biggest hit, “The Emancipation of Mimi,” selling 10 million copies worldwide in 2005.

Def Jam signed her for one album, and then in 2015, she signed with Epic Records, where she is still now.

A single season of American Idol brought in $18 million for her in 2012.

A two-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas cost her $30 million in 2015. As a result, she ended the year as one of the highest-paid female musicians in the world, earning $27 million.

Personal Life

Mariah and Tommy Motalla were married in 1993. In 1998, they called it quits and got a divorce. From 2008 to 2016, she was married to actor Nick Cannon. They are parents to a set of twin boys, born in April of last year. Between 1998 and 2001, she dated musician Luis Miguel and temporarily engaged to Australian businessman James Packer.

Mariah Carey is NOT Worth $500+ Million

Contrary to popular belief (including that of Wikipedia at the time of this writing), Mariah Carey does not have a net worth of $520 million. Mariah had a net worth of $150 million when she entered the marriage in 2008, according to her court records in their divorce procedures in 2015. Nick had a net worth of only $500,000 in 2008. According to records, Mariah earned $6.3 million in 2014, while Nick earned $2.7 million. Nick was compelled to pay $5,000 a month into a trust for their twins as part of their final settlement, which was kept secret. He also received title to a 2012 Ferrari.

Mariah’s gross earnings over the last decade and a half and beyond would have to be north of $1 billion if she was worth $150 million in 2008 and worth $520 million today.

Summary

There’s little doubt that Mariah Carey is worth $320 million. In terms of sales, she is the second-best-selling female artist and one of the top 15 overall. Record deals and royalties have brought in hundreds of millions of dollars for her throughout her career. More than a hundred million dollars have been made off of her media appearances and mansions in Las Vegas, as well as private performances.
