On November 14, the 50-foot-wide, 14-ton tree was installed at Rockefeller Center in New York City after being transported by flatbed truck from Queensbury, New York. The Glen Falls-based Lebowitz family donated the tree, which is thought to be between 85 and 90 years old.
Teams unfolded and lifted this year’s 82-foot tall Norway Spruce into position after it traveled the roughly 200 miles to Manhattan. More than 50,000 LED lights on five kilometers of a wire decorated the tree, which was crowned with a Swarovski crystal star.
Daniel Libeskind, an architect, created the three-dimensional Swarovski star in 2018. It weighs over 900 pounds and has 70 spikes with 3 million crystals on them. The star has a 9 feet, 4-inch diameter. The tree’s lights will be on every day from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. starting after November 30. The tree is lit for the entire day of Christmas.

The tree will be cut down at the end of the season and turned into lumber that will be given to Habitat for Humanity. At 10 p.m., NBC will show live coverage of the lighting of the festive symbol. The coverage on NBC New York starts at 7 p.m., followed by national coverage from 8 to 10 p.m. Peacock will also be streaming it.
The weather is predicted to be a little dicey for much of Wednesday, so your best view will probably be from inside your house or another indoor location. The entire day will be cloudy and windy, and once the rain stops, the temperatures are predicted to drop swiftly.
Bring jackets if you plan to attend the tree lighting in person because it will be in the 40s outside. The public may view it on a first-come, first-served basis. Chevy Chase, star of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” will turn on the holiday lights at a suburban restaurant.
Beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the NYPD will close 49th Street and 50th Street in the vicinity of Rockefeller Center. 48th Street and 51st Street will likewise be blocked at 1 o’clock. 49th and 50th Streets close to Rockefeller Center will be restricted to traffic every day from 11 a.m. to midnight once the tree is lit.
Additionally, on the next three Sundays in December—Dec. 4, Dec. 11, and Dec. 18—Fifth Avenue will only be open to pedestrians. Mother Nature won’t be helping much with the weather as NYC prepares to usher in the holiday season; she’ll bring heavy downpours and ferocious gusts of wind before the big reveal, and then it’ll get chilly, quickly.
