Carlson’s paternal grandparents were Richard Boynton and Dorothy Anderson, teens who placed his father in an orphanage where he was adopted when he was two years old by the Carlsons — a wool merchant and his wife.

Carlson served as a co-host of the ill-fated show “The Spin Room” in the year 2000. Carlson was given the role of co-host of Crossfire in the year 2001.
