The 80th Golden Globes will kick off the 2023 awards season on Tuesday. Following a scandal involving the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the star-studded event is returning for the first time since 2021. (HFPA).
The HFPA was under fire at the time after a Los Angeles Times investigation found ethical violations and a striking lack of diversity – there was not a single Black journalist on the 87-person committee.
Studios and public relations firms have vowed to boycott. Tom Cruise even returned his three Golden Globes, while other celebrities lashed out on social media. Since being enveloped by reaction, the group has reunited and rebuilt, and they are about to air their first live broadcast since the controversy.
The organization has hired a chief diversity officer, restructured its board, welcomed 21 new members, including six Black journalists, formed a five-year relationship with the NAACP, and amended its code of conduct.
Ana de Armas and Selena Gomez have received Golden Globe nominations, while Eddie Murphy will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award on Tuesday night. Here’s what you need to know about the ceremony:

How Am I Supposed To Watch It?
The Golden Globes will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock on Tuesday at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. Last year, no celebrities were present, and no ceremony was broadcast.
Who Is The Host?
Jerrod Carmichael, best known for his roles in the 2014 film “Neighbors,” the NBC sitcom “The Carmichael Show,” and his HBO stand-up special “Rothaniel,” will host for the first time this year.
“We’re thrilled to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” said Helen Hoehne, head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, in a statement late last year.

Who Is Speaking?
Following last year’s boycott, Hollywood celebs are preparing to walk the stage at the Beverly Hilton once more to hand out and receive awards. The HFPA confirmed last week that Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Porter, Ana de Armas, Nicole Byer, Quentin Tarantino, and Tracy Morgan will be among the presenters. Awards will also be presented by Colman Domingo, Natasha Lyonne, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Ana Gasteyer.
Who Are The Candidates?
This year’s nominees for best picture (drama) include “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tár,” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” while “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” and “Triangle of Sadness” are up for the best picture.
“The White Lotus,” “Pam & Tommy,” “The Dropout,” “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” and “Black Bird” are the contenders for outstanding limited series, anthology series, or television motion picture.
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez for “Only Murders in the Building,” Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga for best song, Armas for “Blonde,” Viola Davis for “The Woman King,” Margot Robbie for “Babylon,” and Daniel Craig for “Glass Onion” are among the other candidates.
