Authorities Say a Suspect in the Killings of a California Family Has Been Detained on Accusations of Kidnapping and Murder

A suspect already in jail in connection with the kidnapping and murder of four California family members, including a newborn girl, was formally detained in the case late Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. According to Merced County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Alexandra Britton, Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was arrested on four charges of murder and four counts of abduction.

Salgado is suspected of kidnapping and murdering the four – 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri, her parents Jasleen Kaur and Jasdeep Singh, and her uncle Amandeep Singh – from the victims’ central California family trucking company on Monday.

The corpses of the four were discovered in a farm region in central California’s Merced County on Wednesday evening, police said, with a farmworker alerting authorities to the discovery of at least some of the remains in an orchard there.

Jasleen Kaur left, and Jasdeep Singh, middle, are holding Aroohi, an 8-month-old girl. Amandeep Singh may be seen on the right. Authorities in California have discovered the bodies of an abducted family of four. The revelation, which occurred a day after Salgado was arrested as a suspect, was presented by a visibly distraught sheriff who described the deaths as “absolutely and totally senseless.”

“There’s a particular place in hell for this person,” Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said of the suspect on Wednesday night. Authorities claimed the family was kidnapped at gunpoint from their trucking business in Merced on Monday morning, and the kidnapping was captured on security camera. Authorities claimed they discovered them were gone when a family vehicle was discovered abandoned and on fire that morning.

A picture issued by the Merced Sheriff’s Office shows 48-year-old Jesus Manuel Salgado, who is “suspected of participation in the kidnapping and death of the four victims.” Salgado remains in detention but has yet to face official charges.

According to Britton, police arrested Salgado on Tuesday after his relatives notified authorities that he acknowledged being involved in the kidnapping. “When we are able to expose everything, the circumstances around this should enrage the heck out of you,” Warnke added.

The suspect attempted suicide before being apprehended, and he is currently undergoing medical treatment, according to Warnke. Warnke did not specify how the family was murdered. He believes they were slain where they were discovered, and that they were killed before the sheriff’s department was alerted Monday that the family was missing.

Salgado is the primary suspect in the deaths, but detectives believe others were involved as well, according to Warnke, who did not comment on the amount of that participation. “I am confident that we will discover and discover that there was more than just him participating,” Warnke added.

He has been cooperating with detectives, and officials are working with him to determine a motive, according to Warnke. Salgado has been put into the Merced County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office. CNN was unable to locate a counsel for him, and phone calls to family members went unanswered.

According to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records, Salgado was previously imprisoned for almost a decade after being convicted of attempted false imprisonment, first-degree robbery, and possession of a controlled narcotic. Salgado was sentenced to 11 years in prison in the previous case in January 2007. He was freed on parole in June 2015, and his parole monitoring terminated in June 2018, according to an email from the department to CNN.
