Gerrin Hagen, a Long Beach High School senior and Nassau BOCES student, had been dismissed for the day shortly before he was struck Thursday near Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center, according to a Nassau BOCES spokeswoman in Westbury.
According to Nassau County police, Hagen was hit by a 2012 Honda Pilot on Cantiague Lane at 2:26 p.m. Thursday. The SUV’s 19-year-old driver remained at the scene, and Hagen was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on Friday. Long Beach residents began to pay their respects on Friday. The Long Beach Fire Department shared posts from the Islanders High School Hockey League in which Hagen and his family were asking for prayers.
Hagen was a star hockey defenseman for the Long Island Gulls Amateur Hockey Association, the Long Beach Lightning travel hockey program, and the Long Beach High School varsity hockey team. He was a regular at the Long Beach Ice Arena, according to officials. Long Beach Schools Superintendent Jennifer Gallagher informed parents of Hagen’s death in a letter. “As your superintendent, but even more so as a parent, I am heartbroken to share the news that Gerrin Hagen, a Long Beach High School senior, died today as a result of a tragic accident that occurred yesterday afternoon,” Gallagher wrote. “. As many in our community are aware, Gerrin was a wonderful student, a gifted athlete, and a friend to many.”
During an interview, Friday evening, Anne Conway, president of the district’s school board, stated that the loss had devastated the Long Beach community. She stated that Hagen’s father is an FDNY firefighter and that the family was in mourning. “Gerrin was a true leader who was respected by his peers and teammates,” said Conway.
According to team coach Michael Medrano, Hagen was also a Long Beach lifeguard and captain of the Long Beach High School Varsity Marines hockey team. According to Medrano, Hagen also worked at the Long Beach Ice Arena, teaching younger children to skate and assisting with the Junior Rangers program.
“Ice hockey was Gerrin’s, true love. “He was honored to represent our city,” Medrano said. During Hagen’s final hours, the Long Beach High School lacrosse team gathered at the hospital. “Today, the entire team was present. “We cried together, talked to him, and just went through it as a team,” said the team’s coach, Jason Pearl. “It was a frightening situation. He was a wonderful child who was kind to everyone.”
According to school officials, the district’s crisis response plan was activated, and grief counselors were sent to the high school. Drop-in centers are also available at Long Beach High School and the Lindell School on Sunday and Monday, which are school holidays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Long Island Crisis Center has a 24/7 hotline at 516-679-1111, according to district officials.
