Kevin Jerome Gilyard (born February 5, 1986) is a rapper, musician, and entrepreneur who goes by the stage name Kevin Gates. The terms of his current recording contract see him recording and releasing music under Atlantic Records’ Bread Winners’ Association label. His debut album, 2016’s Islah, debuted at #2 on the US Billboard 200 shortly after its release. Earlier than Islah, Gates released several successful mixtapes. Some of these albums included Stranger Than Fiction, By Any Means, and Luca Brasi 2, all of which charted in the top 40 on the Billboard 200.

Early Life of Kevin Gates
Kevin Jerome Gilyard’s parents, a Puerto Rican mother, and an African American father gave birth to him on February 5, 1986. After spending some time in New Orleans, he and his family eventually settled in Baton Rouge. Gates’s childhood was fraught with conflict; he was arrested for the first time in 1999, when he was just 13 years old, for being a passenger in a stolen car. He and his father had a rocky relationship when he was young but reconciled when he was a teenager. When Gates was 14 years old, his father passed away from AIDS-related complications. He enrolled at Baton Rouge Community College for a short time when he was 17 years old. Gates’ ancestry can be traced back to Morocco and Puerto Rico.

With Boosie’s ascent to fame as one of this city’s most successful rap musicians, Kevin Gates benefited from collaborating with Boosie on multiple tracks and experienced an increase in his career as a result. His career was abruptly cut short in 2008 when he went to prison.
However, in 2011, after serving time, he was released from prison with a master’s degree in psychology and a reinvigorated ambition to succeed in the music industry. Gates quickly gained the attention of Lil’ Wayne‘s record company, Young Money Entertainment, after the release of his debut mixtape, Make ‘Em Believe.
