Luca 2 Release Date, Plot, Cast, Production, Marketing, Songs, Future and More!

Luca 2 is an upcoming animated Disney/Pixar film that is a sequel to the 2021 Pixar movie Luca. It takes place one year after the events of the first film. Some of the original actors from the first movie come back, including Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Emma Berman. It will be published on June 27, 2023.

Synopsis

A year after the events of Luca, our underdogs have re-emerged. Giulia’s mother is in town to meet Alberto, her stepson, and Luca’s parents, whom she hasn’t seen in a long time. However, things go from bad to worse when Massimo is around. Giulia’s parents have separated, and Luca must assist get them back together; he must also figure out why. In the meantime, an old buddy from the US teaches our heroes about the world and helps them learn new things, and they’ll discover that family is vital as they work to save one.

Plot

Luca, Giulia, Alberto, his family, and Massimo were all present at the train station when Luca and Giulia boarded the train to Genoa in the first movie. He and Giulia, with whom we’ve seen Luca form the strongest bonds thus far, can embark on new adventures and gain a deeper grasp of the world. There are a plethora of storylines that might be developed, from school misadventures to other types of adventures, or we could even witness Luca’s struggles while he is away from home. Then again, given how close Luca and Alberto were in the previous film, Alberto may join them in some way.

Production

Enrico Casarosa, the director of Luca, indicated an interest in making a sequel after the film’s premiere. Luca and Giulia’s efforts to reconnect Massimo and his wife would be comparable to the plot of The Parent Trap. When Disney+ subscribers were asked about their thoughts on the film, they were asked “how likely would each household member [want] to watch another movie involving the characters and world of Luca if it became available,” which implied that the studio was considering making another sequel at some point.

Casarosa announced Luca 2, a sequel to the first film, during the D23 Expo 2022. The story was co-written by Casarosa, Jesse Andrews, and Simon Stephenson. After receiving concept drawings and story ideas from Thomas Jones, Casarosa encouraged him to help with the story. Work on the film began in September 2022.

For the sequel, they rehired the original cast members. The end of voice recording for characters came in January. Early in February, all postproduction was completed. Disney called Ava Justin on February 3, 2023, to play an undisclosed role in the film, she tweeted at the time. A shot from the teaser and film’s trailer, taken by Casarosa, showed Luca standing next to his BMW Isetta. It was announced in April that the film will take place in 1969, exactly one year after the events of the first film.

Marketing

A teaser trailer for the film was shown during the Super Bowl LVII halftime show. With 47 million views on YouTube in a single day, the film’s cast was announced on March 17, 2023. The movie will debut on Disney+ on June 27th as an original and in theatres on the same day. The final trailer was released on May 14th. Two commercials for the film were released by GEICO on June 12. One had the gecko telling Luca that he could save 15% or more on insurance for his boat, house, RV, and even his motorcycle if he only spent 15 minutes a day doing it.

For another, we saw his mother daydreaming about riding a Vespa while jamming out to the Foundations’ “Build Me Up Buttercup.” BMW offered a free Disney+ subscription to customers who purchased a BMW as a promotion for the film. Toys from the movie were included in Happy Meals to encourage customers to go out and collect them all. Walt Disney World decorated Epcot in Italian decor for the film’s premiere in mid-June, and Mattel released toys based on the movie at the same time. Free movie tickets were offered to people who won a bid on a BMW at several auctions across the country. Vespa created limited-edition scooters featuring the film’s characters. 20,000 were produced.

To celebrate the release of the film, Rocket League gave away movie-themed BMW Isettas to players. Toys, books, clothing, and other merchandise were also released by Disney to promote the film. Film crew members made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show The Tonight Show, where a short clip from the film was shown.

Using the app Disney Magic Kingdoms, the first film’s event was released and a new one was added. Massimo, Lisa, Luca, and Alberto’s family were also promoted by having certain characters complete tasks to unlock them. For a limited time, the Submarine Voyage ride at Disneyland was rethemed to reflect Luca’s personality. To see sea monsters, the ride would travel to the waters off Portorosso. Luca himself will be on hand to show off his underwater habitat, so you’ll get to meet him in person.

Future

On July 17, 2023, during an interview with Apple’s Casarosa, it was revealed that a third film, a short film, and an animated television series for Disney+ were all in the works. Additionally, he revealed that the Peanuts gang would appear in a crossover special called Mamma Mia, Charlie Brown! in which Charlie Brown would wind up in Italy after a minor mishap while en route to London for a student exchange programme.

Luca and his friends would be waiting for Charlie Brown in Portorosso, where he would travel across the country in search of his friends and eventually meet them. Disney+ and Apple+ both released it on September 15, 2023. When Casarosa announced the next film’s title, Luca: Grown Up, on November 20, fans were overjoyed. As he explained, the story will pick up 20 years after the events of the first film, with an adult Luca raising his family and attempting to persuade the rest of the world that his kind isn’t all bad.
