Paul Wellstone Died 20 Years Ago in Minnesota
On October 25, 2002, the Minnesota Democrat who was known for his large green bus, activism, and zeal for improving people’s lives was taken from this world when he was murdered in an aircraft crash.
Today marks the anniversary of the horrific aircraft accident on the Iron Range in Minnesota that took the lives of seven people, including U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife, daughter, and five other people.
Wellstone was born in Washington, District of Columbia, in 1944. He became famous for his large green bus, his activism, and his zeal for bettering the lives of other people. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Wellstone accepted a teaching position at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He remained in this position for a total of 21 years.
The Democrat who was considered to be an underdog gained a seat in Congress in 1990. He continued to hold this position for another 11 years till his passing. Read more: Vanessa Lee Chester Net Worth: Age, Height & More!
On October 25, 2002, Senator Wellstone, his wife Sheila, and his daughter Marcia were all killed when the private plane he was flying in crashed on approach to the Eveleth Airport. Also lost in the crash were campaign staffers McLaughlin, Tom Lapic, and Mary McEvoy, as well as Captains Richard Conry and Michael Guess.
The accident would subsequently be attributed to human error, with the National Transportation Safety Board concluding that the crew failed to maintain a sufficient air speed for the stormy weather conditions.
A monument has been constructed in the location of the forest where the plane crashed, and it receives tens of thousands of tourists each year. Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis was chosen as the location for the Wellstones’ interment.
“I recall that one of the first classes I had from him was on movements and social organizing, and I remember that one of the first things he said in one of his early seminars was, ‘you can’t separate the life you live from the words that you utter,'” she added. “I remember that.” In 2017, 15 years after Wellstone’s passing, Dan Cramer discussed politics with KARE 11’s political John Croman. Cramer, who stated that he was intrigued by Wellstone’s approach to politics, started as one of Wellstone’s students before becoming a volunteer and staff member for his campaign. According to Cramer, “the concept that politics wasn’t about left, right, or center, wasn’t about huge money or playing for power, but rather it was about the improvement of people’s lives”
