In Hamari Beti (1950), she co-starred alongside her older sister Nutan as Baby Tanuja. As an adult, she made her film debut in Chhabili (1960), directed by her mother and starring her sister Nutan. Hamari Yaad Aayegi (1961), directed by Kidar Sharma, who had previously discovered Raj Kapoor, Madhubala, and Geeta Bali, was the film that properly marked her transition to adult heroine.
One of her early films notable for her acting was Shaheed Latif’s Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966). In fact, it was Guru Dutt’s last offering, particularly in the song “Woh Hanke mile house” (believed to have been filmed while Guru Dutt was still alive), who worked hard to help her “tone down” her performance. As a result, the natural, spontaneous actress gave a highly restrained performance that became the centerpiece of the picture — and her career — as she quickly went to starring roles.
Tanuja played an important supporting part in the critically acclaimed film Jewel Thief. Her next major film was Izzat (1968), in which she starred alongside Dharmendra. Jeene Ki Raah (1969), her second big film with Jeetendra, was an instant and unexpected hit. Tanuja won Best Supporting Actress at Filmfare the same year for Paisa Ya Pyar. She continued with Anthony-Firingee (1967) and Rajkumari (1968). (1970). Tanuja had on-screen chemistry with Soumitra Chatterjee, with whom she co-starred in Teen Bhuvaner Party (1969) and Prothom Kadam Phool (1970). Tanuja delivered her own dialogue in these Bengali flicks.
Tanuja then took a break from acting for a few years before returning when her marriage failed. She was suddenly offered supporting roles, many of which starred former heroes. In Khuddar, her Pyar Ki Kahani hero Amitabh Bachchan had to address her as “bhabhi” (sister-in-law) (1982). She also appeared in Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog as a supporting actress (1982). In 1986, he received an invitation from Sri Lanka to appear in the Sinhalese film Peralikarayo, which starred Vijaya Kumaratunga.
