He was best known for his role as BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch whom he portrayed as a regular cast member on the NBC police drama series Homicide.

After Belzer’s first divorce, he returned to New York City, where he lived with singer Shelley Ackerman and performed stand-up comedy at venues such as Pips, The Improv, and Catch a Rising Star. Belzer was the co-star of the fake TV show The Dealers on Channel One, a comedy ensemble he was a part of that formed the inspiration for the cult classic The Groove Tube.

Belzer made three performances between 1975 and 1980 as the audience warm-up comedian on Saturday Night Live. He also served as Warren Zevon’s opening act on the tour in support of Warren Zevon’s record Excitable Boy.
