Carly Simon Loses Both Sisters to Cancer, Lucy Simon and Joanna Simon One-day-apart Deaths
Carly Simon’s two sisters both died of cancer on the same day. At age 82, Broadway composer Lucy passed away in Piermont, New York, from metastatic breast cancer. Sister Joanna, an opera singer and the eldest of the three, passed away this past Wednesday at the age of 85 from thyroid cancer.
For her role in “The Secret Garden,” Lucy Simon received a Tony Award nomination. She and Carly Simon used to play together as the Simon Sisters in Provincetown, Massachusetts until she decided to pursue a career in songwriting. Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” peaked at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. In 1981 and 1983, “In Harmony” by Lucy Simon and David Levine received Grammy Awards.
Although Lucy Simon had a hand in writing the music and lyrics for the musical “On Cedar Street,” which was adapted from the 2015 novel “Our Souls at Night,” she ultimately had to withdraw due to her illness. Her family includes her ex-husband Christopher Knight, her daughter Julie, her sister Carly, and their children and grandchildren Sophie, Ben, Charlie, and Evie.
In 1962, Joanna Simon made her New York City Opera debut in the role of Cherubino from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. As the title character in Thomas Pasatieri’s “Black Widow,” she graced the Seattle Opera stage in 1972. She performed the role of Pelagia in Robert Starer’s ‘The Last Lover’ at Caramoor in 1975. Up until 1986, she sang as a soprano with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and Pittsburgh Symphony. Before winning an Emmy in 1992 for her coverage of the link between bipolar disorder and the creative process, Joanna worked as a journalist covering the arts for PBS’s “MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour.” She had a long marriage to writer Gerald Walker, from 1976 to 2004, and dated Walter Cronkite, from 2005 to 2009.
