FDNY Firefighter William Moon Suffers Fatal Head Injury at Brooklyn Station

The New York City Fire Department confirmed Friday that a seasoned fireman died as a result of a head injury suffered at work earlier in the week. FDNY Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and NYC Mayor Eric Adams revealed in a joint press conference that firefighter William P. Moon II will not survive a 20-foot fall he experienced on Monday while practicing for a drill at his Brooklyn firehouse, Rescue Company 2.

Moon, 47, was treated promptly by his colleagues for his injuries before being transported to Kings County Hospital in critical condition. The Islip resident had been with the department for 21 years. His family has stated that he will donate his organs.

While preparing for a drill at his Brooklyn station, FDNY firefighter William P. Moon II suffered a fatal head injury. “This is a sad loss for our city and for New York’s Bravest,” Adams added. “Firefighter Moon was a dedicated public servant who spent more than two decades saving New Yorkers’ lives and will continue to do so even after his death.

“Loving Billy was a marriage of families as well as a marriage to the fire department. His devotion to the job extended far beyond the confines of the firehouse. He instilled that same passion in our children and always stressed the importance of helping others. We shall be eternally grateful for the Christmas miracles Billy will be able to do for others.”

According to the FDNY, Moon’s organ donation might save up to eight lives. Moon joined the FDNY on May 5, 2002, and began his career with Ladder Company 133 in Queens, where he worked for 20 years, according to the FDNY. Earlier this year, he was transferred to Rescue Company 2.

Moon served 28 years with the Islip Volunteer Fire Department on Long Island, where he was a member of the drill squad, marching band, and hockey team, in addition to his decades with the FDNY. From 2016 to 2017, he was also the IVFD’s fire chief and a member of the historical committee.

“Our hearts go out to Moon’s family and friends, as well as our entire department. He dedicated his life to assisting others, both here at the FDNY and as a volunteer fire chief on Long Island. Firefighting was in his blood, and he reflected our Department’s energy and commitment “Kavanagh explained.

“He was an advocate for organ donation, and just as he saved countless lives while working at the fire station, he will continue to save lives in his death.” Moon “was the heart and soul of the department, a dedicated and great fireman, and a mentor to many whose effect will be forgotten,” according to Islip VFD Chief Alden Schroeder.
