Mauro Emanuel Icardi Rivero (born 19 February 1993) is an Argentine professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray on loan from Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain. Icardi began his football career with the Vecindario youth teams and progressed via La Masia, the youth system of La Liga club Barcelona, before joining Serie A club Sampdoria in 2012. After an outstanding season, he joined Inter Milan in July 2013, where he became one of Europe’s most prolific attackers.

Icardi was chosen Inter’s captain in 2015, at the age of 22, after winning the Capocannoniere in both the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons. Three years later, Icardi helped Inter enter the UEFA Champions League for the first time in six years, becoming the club’s eighth-highest goalscorer of all time. Icardi signed a one-year loan agreement with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, where he won the domestic treble. He then signed a permanent contract with the club for €50 million.

Icardi earned his senior debut for Argentina in October 2013 but has since appeared in only a few games. He was controversially left out of Argentina’s final FIFA World Cup roster. This has frequently been attributed to his marriage to Wanda Nara, the ex-wife of Icardi’s former Sampdoria colleague Maxi López. Because of her public involvement with Icardi, López and Nara divorced.

Icardi was born in Rosario, Argentina, and relocated to the Canaries when he was nine years old. He began his football career in Gran Canaria with Vecindario, where he scored over 50 goals in the youth levels.

After proposals from Valencia, Sevilla, Espanyol, Deportivo La Corua, Arsenal, and Liverpool, he was contested over by Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2007. Barcelona won the race to get Icardi and will keep him until 2013.  Icardi joined the Catalan club at the beginning of the 2008-09 season and was a member of the U-17 team. The next season, he was promoted to the U-19 team before joining Sampdoria on loan in January 2011. Icardi later indicated that leaving Barcelona was not a poor decision and that he felt confident in his decision to move on.

Sampdoria confirmed on 11 January 2011 that Icardi has signed a loan deal with the club until the end of the season. After a successful six-month loan with la Samp, where he scored 13 goals in 19 games for the Primavera team, the Italian club exercised the option to buy Icardi for €400,000 in July 2011, signing a three-year contract.  In the 2011-12 season, he scored 19 goals in Group A of the reserve league, tying him for third place with Gonzalo Barreto of Group C.

He made his first-team debut against Juve Stabia on May 12, 2012, after coming off the bench to replace Bruno Fornaroli in the 75th minute. Sampdoria won the match 2-1 as Icardi scored his first professional goal ten minutes later.  On September 26, 2012, he made his Serie A debut for Sampdoria against Roma, coming on in the 49th minute to replace Paraguayan midfielder Marcelo Estigarribia.

Wanda Nara, an Argentine media personality, is Icardi’s wife. Nara was previously married to Icardi’s former Sampdoria teammate Maxi López, but the couple divorced after her affair with Icardi was revealed. In December 2013, she and López filed for divorce.  Nara and Icardi married on May 27, 2014, just a few months after their divorce was finalized, in an intimate ceremony in Buenos Aires.  They have two daughters, Francesca, who was born on January 19, 2015, and Isabella, who was born on October 27, 2016.

Icardi’s marriage to Wanda sparked hostility in Argentina, making him the target of rumors and false charges in Argentine newspapers. It has been argued that the generalized hatred for him has played a significant role in his failure to be called up to the national team, and even potential calls have been heavily criticized by figures such as the late Diego Maradona, who had engaged in bitter Twitter exchanges with Icardi as a result of his marriage to Nara.  During a Serie A match between Sampdoria and Inter in April 2014, López refused to shake Icardi’s hand, prompting the press to name the game the “Wanda derby.”  López repeated the story two years later, refusing to shake Icardi’s hand during a Serie A match against Torino.

On October 11, 2016, Sperling & Kupfer published Icardi’s memoirs, Sempre Avanti (Always Forward). The book sparked debate because Icardi revealed an incident that outraged some Inter fans, prompting a banner to be raised demanding for Icardi to quit the club.  The club penalized him and required him to remove such language from the book.
