New World: What You Need to Know About Amazon’s New Mmo!

In the last week or so, the term “New World” has been bandied around a lot in the gaming community. One of gaming’s most anticipated releases finally came out on Wednesday after a series of delays. It’s produced by Amazon Games, which makes it a high-stakes release for the commerce behemoth after the loss of the previous Amazon title Crucible.

New World is off to a promising start in terms of a massively multiplayer online game’s success. Currently, Steam data shows that New World has the most active players and the most Twitch viewers of all games. On Wednesday, more than 700,000 people were playing New World on Steam, a record for the platform.

It’s a mystery to me.

What is New World?

Amazon Games has developed a fantasy MMO game called New World, which is only available on the PC. Large budget MMOs in 2021 (and you know Amazon has a big budget) include all the trappings you’d expect: an enormous world with various environments, a wide choice of modes that include PvP and PvE, and deep roleplaying options.

You’ll need to experience New World to fully comprehend the game’s many, many features. This is a rough outline, but it’s a start.

The setting for New World is Aeternum, a fictitious atoll in the Atlantic. As an explorer, your goal is to colonize the island of Aeternum, but you soon discover that the island is home to a mysterious material known as Azoth. Even if you aren’t aware of it, Azoth can bring back to life those who have visited Aeternum before you. Overall, the island’s goal is to put you down as quickly as possible. You’ll use the power of Azoth to fight back.

There are three factions to choose from at the beginning: The Marauders, the Syndicate, and a third faction called the Covenant. Within each faction are businesses (what would be a guild or clan in another game), which you can join. Aeternum’s settlements can be taken over by a group of companies, which can transform them into player cities that you must defend. The Corrupted, The Lost, The Ancient, and The Angry Earth are all computer-controlled groups. As a player, you’ll have to join one of the player-controlled groups at war.

What About Multiplayer?

The player-controlled factions are at the heart of New World’s multiplayer. There are four types of multiplayer in New World: Expeditions, Invasions, Outpost Rush, and War Mode. Here’s what they entail:

Expedition: This is your conventional MMO dungeon. You and four other players partner together to solve puzzles and take down big bad guys.

War Mode: A 100-person PvP mode that pits one faction against another. Either you’re attacking another faction’s fort or defending your own.

Invasion: This is New World’s PvE mode, where you’ll work with 49 other players (so 50 in total) to defend your faction’s fort against waves of computer-controlled enemies. You need to survive for 30 minutes to be victorious.

Outpost Rush: Here’s where it gets a bit complicated. Outpost Rush is a PvPvE mode. It’s a 20v20 battle where you fight against another team to capture and defend outposts, all while fighting off computer-controlled enemies.

Why Is New World a Big Deal for Amazon?

A year ago, Amazon Games announced that it was shifting its focus from mobile games (such as Airport Mania and To-Fu Fury) to AAA game development to compete with major publishers such as Activision-Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Square Enix. Three titles were unveiled: Breakaway, Crucible, and New World in 2016.

Esports game Breakaway was canceled in 2018 because of its focus on the e-sports community. At the time of its initial release in March, critics panned Crucible, an online cooperative shooter somewhat akin to Overwatch. As a result, Amazon shut down Crucible servers after just seven months.

As a result, Amazon Games is looking forward to New World because the studio is in desperate need of a big win at the moment. Originally scheduled to launch in May 2020, New World was then pushed back to August 2021, before a final one-month delay was imposed.

What’s the Response Been So Far?

Launch day feedback has been mixed, but the long queues to get into New World’s servers have been mentioned in many of the negative Steam reviews. New World has attracted a large number of players even though reviews from critics have yet to be published. So the server queues were a result.

In terms of both popularity and popularity, New World is the most popular PC game in the world today. At the time of this writing, 542,000 people are playing New World on Steam, and more than 620,000 people are watching New World streams on Twitch (compared to 230,000 for Grand Theft Auto 5 and 110,000 for Apex Legends).
