BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A mother from Central Florida said she was dealing with “her own mental hurricane” when she and her family drove to a hospital in Melbourne through Hurricane Ian’s gusty winds and heavy rain to safely deliver their baby girl on Wednesday – the same day the category storm made landfall in Florida. The mother and her family arrived at the hospital without incident.
Hanna-Kay Williams, who had begun experiencing contractions the day before, stated that she doesn’t even remember the dark and dismal trip that she took to go to First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center to give birth. At two in the morning on Wednesday, Williams, her fiancé, and her mother arrived at the hospital after driving there.
Williams went through more than 20 hours of labor. Still, she ultimately needed an emergency cesarean surgery since she wasn’t completely dilated, and the baby started showing distress throughout the delivery.
According to a news release, the hospital stated that “their religion and family spirit” made them more substantial during the process. Being optimistic amid the terrible weather helped them do so as well.
“I think it’s safe to say that we came out on top,” Williams stated. “When she first arrived, and they laid her on my lap, I first said, ‘that’s a large baby.’ Then I looked at her and thought, ‘that’s my twin.’ Even though I already had a fraternal twin, I felt like she was my twin when I looked at her.”
The little girl was given the name Wajiha and was delivered on Wednesday at 10:11 p.m. She weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces and was 20 inches long.
