Miami Beach Enforces Spring Break Curfew After 2 Shootings

The mayor of Miami Beach has implemented an evening curfew during spring break to prevent violence and “unruly crowds” after two fatal shootings took place over the weekend. The majority of the city’s South Beach neighborhood, where spring breakers like going out, is subject to the curfew.

According to a news release from the city, it is in effect from Sunday at 11:59 p.m. through Monday at 6 a.m. The city announced that additional curfew limits are scheduled for Thursday through Monday, but that it will review additional curfew limitations following the initial window.

The limitations, which included a state of emergency, were put in place “to prevent dangerous and illegal activity and in response to the two shootings and the overly large and disorderly crowds,” the city stated. Two persons died in the two incidents, one on Friday night and the other early on Sunday, according to a different news statement.

For the third year running, Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency and instituted a curfew for the spring break season. After five people were shot and injured last year, the city issued limitations. Restrictions were put in place in 2021 due to concerns about the coronavirus.
