Eastern Kentucky School System Cancels Classes to Allow the Community to Mourn the Tragic Death of a Kid
This week, many people in Pikeville are mourning the untimely death of a beloved second-grader. Andrew James Allen, 7, passed away Saturday at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington after a brief illness.
The Tragic Death Of A Child Has Prompted the Eastern Kentucky School System To Cancel Classes For The Day
Pikeville Independent Schools announced in a letter that all of the district’s schools will be closed on Wednesday to allow kids to attend Allen’s father’s funeral at the Main Street Church of Christ, where he has served as pastor for the past 12 years.
Allen’s visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for noon on Wednesday. “It’s clearly a great loss for his family, but it’s also a loss for all of our church family,” said Keith Slone, a church deacon and lifelong family friend.
“We’re all in deep mourning with them.” Slone, who had known Allen his whole life, described him as a “staple” of the church. Slone said he frequently saw Allen with his father at church and other gatherings throughout the week. Get unrestricted digital access.

Students and staff were urged to wear Allen’s favorite color on Tuesday. Trimble remarked over the phone on Tuesday, “I’m sitting here with my blue shirt on.” “Everyone knew that blue was Andrew’s favorite color. If you questioned our students in the building yesterday, they would all tell you that Andrew’s favorite color was blue.” Today’s top stories Sign up for the PM Newsletter and receive the day’s top stories in your inbox.
That was one of the reasons the district decided not to have classes on the same day as the funeral of “one of our dear pupils.” “We live in a world where we can all use a very good grin and a lot of love,” Trimble added. “Andrew made certain to demonstrate that.
I can assure you that just by witnessing our kids react to this circumstance yesterday, they acknowledged his generosity. They noticed his devotion and recall his smile.” CHILDRESS RICHARD Guaranteed interviews with IIT Madras CCE and Intellipaat certification. Monthly rent begins at $5,500.
